STATEMENT: Latest tax plan is desperate effort that hasn't been thought through

Oklahoma Policy Institute released the following statement in response to the newest tax cut plan from the House:

The latest House plan (details here) is a nakedly political effort to pass anything that can be called a tax cut, even if it hasn’t been thought through. It would determine the next ten years of tax policy with a bill thrown together during the last hours of session. It runs counter to statements by numerous elected officials and business and community leaders who say that putting the tax system on auto-pilot through triggers is irresponsible and unwise. It contradicts the principled stand taken earlier in the session that any tax plan must be paid for. It also goes against the wishes of large majorities of Oklahomans who have said that they do not want to trade funding for education and other core services for tax cuts. We need to take time to develop the right tax policy, not play political games with Oklahoma’s future.

  1. Dear David and friends,
I have been more than a casual observer of the legislature for at least 40 years. Never have I seen such ignorance, self centeredness and incompetence by the so called “leadership”. No wonder so many of the rank and file members in both parties rebelled. For me it is very sad. For my grandchildren, and all children in Oklahoma, it is tragic. This bunch wouldn’t know a core service from a cow chip even if they stepped in it………which they have. Clueless Mary Fallin set the tone and the lemmings have followed but it will be the other 3.6 million Oklahomans who pay the price in so many ways. Actually many already have. Thank you and all at OPI for your priceless work. Cal Hobson
