Most educators will tell you suspension doesn't work for the children. They act out, get suspended then return to school, behind in their work and either embarrassed or pleased by their suspension. Often nothing is offered to the child during suspension but days off from school. Suspension becomes a feeder for the criminal justice system.

The second session of the 57th Oklahoma Legislature begins in just over a week, and one of OK Policy's top legislative priorities is targeted criminal justice reform to address Oklahoma's incarceration crisis. Together Oklahoma, an advocacy program of the Oklahoma Policy Institute, is working to ensure that every Oklahoman is counted during the upcoming 2020 Census by identifying partner organizations to reach hard-to-count residents. To aid in this, Together Oklahoma is seeking community partners across the state to strengthen 2020 Census outreach efforts and ensure a more accurate count of all Oklahomans.

The Governor's Criminal Justice RESTORE Task Force issued its initial report last week with some interesting narrative and recommendations. One area the task force commented on was bail and pretrial detention. The report correctly points out the inadequacy and injustice of the current bail system.
