1A: HERE IS A SAMPLE FIRST PARAGRAPH [PART IN YELLOW OPTIONAL AND CAN BE VARIED TO YOUR CONCERNS]

I am writing today because I am very concerned with the proposals at the capitol to cut the personal income tax.  It’s not right to cut taxes when we have failed to meet our commitments to the people of Oklahoma.  Our children’s class sizes are larger than they have been in years, our roads and bridges are crumbling, and we’re not serving many with mental illness and disabilities who need care and treatment. Cutting the state income tax is the wrong priority at a time when we urgently need to reinvest in our schools, infrastructure, safety net and public safety.  We should not pay for tax cuts by doing away with tax credits such as the earned income tax credit, child tax credit and sales tax relief credit that are important for hundreds of thousands of working Oklahoma families.

1B: HERE IS A SAMPLE FIRST PARAGRAPH FOCUSED ON EDUCATION.  WE HAVE A SERIES OF FACT SHEETS THAT WILL HELP YOU CUSTOMIZE YOUR CONCERNS FOR OTHER ISSUES, INCLUDING HIGHER EDUCATION, HEALTH CARE, PUBLIC SAFETY, RURAL OKLAHOMA, SENIORS, CHILDREN, LOW-INCOME OKLAHOMANS, AND OKLAHOMANS WITH DISABILITIES.

I am writing today because I am very concerned with the proposals at the capitol to cut the personal income tax.  Oklahoma’s education system has suffered through three years of budget cuts, and our children are seeing the effects through larger class sizes and fewer programs.  Cutting the state income tax will lead to more cuts in our already underfunded education system.  Please prioritize our children’s education over income tax cuts, and vote against any proposal which will lead to fewer dollars in our classrooms.

2. HERE IS A SAMPLE SECOND/CONCLUDING PARAGRAPH

I am also concerned that many of these proposals include triggers which will automatically cut the income tax further in future years.  These proposals do not take into account the future needs we may have as a state or emergencies that may arise.  Please vote against any proposal that would put our tax policy on auto-pilot with triggers instead of allowing future legislators to make decisions based upon our state’s needs.

Thank you for your consideration of these issues.
